Matilo Day Trip and Cruise on the Old Rhine
Cruise along the Old Rhine to Park Matilo on Saturday 19 September 2026, then visit the National Museum of Antiquities after lunch. €69 p.p.; booking available.
19 September 2026

This full-day historical excursion follows Leiden’s Roman frontier from the water. You cruise along the Old Rhine to Park Matilo, visit its historic gardens and, after lunch, continue to the National Museum of Antiquities to explore finds from Leiden and the surrounding region.
Practical information
What will you do?
The day starts at Stadscafé Van der Werff. From there you cruise along the Old Rhine, which formed part of the northern frontier of the Roman Empire. The approximately three-hour morning programme travels to the former fort of Matilo, where you leave the boat to visit Archaeological Park Matilo and its historic gardens before returning to central Leiden.
After the included lunch, the programme continues at the National Museum of Antiquities. Expert guides focus on Roman objects found in Leiden and the surrounding region.
Who is this day trip for?
It is particularly suitable for visitors interested in Roman history, archaeology, boat trips and guided cultural programmes. Solo travellers may also appreciate joining a small organised group. The long, information-rich schedule may be less suitable for young children or visitors seeking a short, flexible activity.
Is it worth attending?
Yes, especially for history and heritage enthusiasts. The €69 price covers almost a full day of expert guidance, a boat trip, coffee or tea and lunch. Combining the Old Rhine, Park Matilo and the National Museum of Antiquities makes this more substantial than a standard sightseeing cruise. Museum admission is not included, however.
Each departure is limited to 25 participants. This is small enough for explanations and questions, although the programme follows fixed group timings.
Practical tips
- Advance registration is required.
- Bring a Museumkaart or VriendenLoterij VIP card when applicable.
- Wear comfortable shoes for the visit to Park Matilo.
- Part of the programme is outdoors and on the water, so dress for the weather.
- Dietary requirements, boat accessibility and mobility arrangements are not detailed on the event page. Discuss these with Historizon before booking.
Starting point and transport
The excursion starts at Stadscafé Van der Werff, Steenstraat 2, only a few minutes on foot from Leiden Central station. Drivers are generally better using a central car park or Haagweg park-and-ride.
