Indoor bouldering in southern Leiden

Boulderhal Kunststof on Rooseveltstraat is an established indoor venue with routes for beginners, experienced climbers and dedicated athletes. Bouldering takes place without ropes on low walls above thick mats. Hold colours indicate difficulty and part of the circuit is reset regularly, keeping the venue varied for returning climbers.

First visit without a compulsory course

No compulsory course is required for a normal visit. Every climber registers on arrival, accepts the house and safety rules and receives a short explanation when needed. Beginners can then start independently on easy routes. Structured introductions and technique courses are available for visitors wanting more guidance.

Entry and rentals

Single entry costs €14.50 for ages 25 and over, €13.40 for ages 18–24 and €11.20 for ages 6–17. Entry remains valid all day. Climbing shoes cost €4.50 to rent and a chalk bag €3. Socks are compulsory in rental shoes. Payment is by card or contactless only.

Opening hours

Kunststof opens Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 23:00 and at weekends from 09:00 to 19:00. Public holidays, competitions and staff events can create exceptions. Check the date-specific notice before travelling, particularly around local celebrations and major holidays.

Routes and training

The hall provides boulders across ability levels and facilities for focused strength and technique work. Bouldering combines strength, mobility, coordination and problem solving. Beginners benefit from deliberate footwork and controlled down-climbing, while experienced visitors can train dynamic movement, small holds and steeper angles.

Courses

Bouldering 101 costs €8.50 excluding admission and shoe rental. Longer technique courses include Basic Technique at around €70 and Technique+ at around €75, also excluding entry. Courses run at fixed times and need advance booking.

Groups and adult coaching

Adult groups can book a trainer for €70 per hour or €105 for ninety minutes, plus regular admission for every participant. Small groups of up to fifteen may sometimes attend without a trainer, although booking is recommended. Groups above fifteen require instruction. Schools and sports clubs can request a custom programme.

Youth clinic and age rules

The youth sports clinic is for children aged eight or over, with six to ten participants. It costs €22 per child and includes about an hour of bouldering plus a drink and crisps. For regular visits, children aged five and under may not boulder independently, ages six to eleven need direct supervision and visitors aged twelve or over may climb independently.

Safety rules

Mats are landing zones, not places to sit or play. Non-climbers remain on the concrete and keep clear. Jewellery must be removed, outdoor shoes are prohibited and climbing under the influence of alcohol or drugs is forbidden. Down-climbing is safer than jumping. One adult may supervise no more than two children under twelve.

Facilities

Facilities include changing rooms, showers, a bar, training equipment, a climbing shop and cooperation with Fysiofabriek. Visitors can stay in the café after climbing. Outside food is not permitted apart from closed drink bottles, and pets are not allowed.

Access and parking

The venue is outside the historic centre, closer to Leiden Lammenschans and main roads. Cycling is usually fastest from the centre. Parking is available on or around Rooseveltstraat. The hall mentions free periods at weekends and in the evening, but parking zones can change, so check local signs.

Who will enjoy Kunststof?

Kunststof suits individual athletes, couples, students, groups of friends, families with children aged six or over and company or school groups. Our assessment

Long hours, routes for every level, clear youth rules and a complete course and group offer are major strengths. All-day entry is reasonable, but shoe and chalk rental increase the first-visit cost. The location is less central than many tourist activities, yet Kunststof is complete and reliable for an active session.
