Tabú Leiden

Tabú sits beside the Witte Singel, just outside the busiest shopping streets but within a short walk of Rapenburg, Hortus botanicus and the Pieterswijk. Its waterside terrace, glasshouse dining room, warm lighting and striking cocktail bar make it one of Leiden's more atmospheric restaurant settings. The concept clearly centres on Latin food, shared dining, cocktails and lively evenings.

The menu combines dishes inspired by several Latin American cuisines. It covers ceviche, tacos, small bites, fish, meat and vegetarian or vegan options. Small dishes cost roughly €6–€14, tacos generally €11.50–€12.50 and mains €21–€27.50. The €42.50 three-course menu is available from two people. The menu has more personality than an average brasserie, although Tabú is not a refined fine-dining restaurant.

The cocktail list is central to the experience. Standard cocktails cost around €11–€14.50 and alcohol-free alternatives €9–€11. The current drinks menu advertises Cocktail Madness every day from 16:00 to 17:00, with cocktails at €8.50. From Thursday to Saturday after 21:30, selected tacos and highballs are also €8.50.

The public Google snapshot was 4.3/5 from 1,914 reviews, while a second public review score was 3.5/5 from 130 ratings. Many guests praise the atmosphere, cocktails, terrace and friendly staff. Criticism is less consistent but recurring themes include waits, forgotten orders, incorrect dishes and time pressure from reservation slots. The editorial score is therefore 8.1/10: strong as a complete evening venue, but not flawless in execution.

Tabú uses standard reservation slots of 2.5 hours. Terrace reservations are possible but do not automatically guarantee an indoor table if the weather changes. Booking is not compulsory, although it is sensible for dinner, fine weather and events. Drivers are directed to Haagweg Parking, which at the time of checking cost €4.50 for up to 1.5 hours and a maximum of €23 per 24 hours, including free shuttle transport to the centre.

Vegetarians and vegans have several choices, and the website links to an official allergen guide. Tabú states that its soft tacos are made from gluten-free corn flour. That is not a full coeliac-safety guarantee, so cross-contact, work surfaces and any fryer use should be discussed in advance. A significant practical limitation is that Tabú's own FAQ states that the restaurant is not wheelchair accessible.

Honest verdict: Tabú works particularly well for a cocktail date, lively dinner with friends, group night or sunny waterside lunch. The atmosphere and drinks are stronger than the consistency of every individual dish. It is not the first choice for a quiet culinary evening without time limits or for wheelchair users.
