What has been announced for 2026?

The first names show the festival’s broad range. Ntjam Rosie brings a blend of soul, pop, jazz and African rhythms. Leiden AI researcher Thomas Moerland explores the development of artificial intelligence and how it compares with human intelligence. Haroon Sheikh discusses technology and shifting world orders, while Joost van de Loo and Frederique de Jong examine morality in environments shaped by money and power.

The programme also includes an AI pub quiz with young LIACS researchers, a talk about navigation and getting lost, live music and several light, robotic and media-art installations. NYX, STRINGED, Robotic Love, MICROFAUNA and CyberPalm Oasis are among the announced works. Exact times and venues have not yet been published for every item.

The seven festival venues

The current venue list includes Hortus botanicus Leiden, the Academy Building, the Faculty Club, the National Museum of Antiquities, Rapenburg, Pieterskerk and Pieterskerkplein, and Gravensteen. All are in Leiden’s historic centre. Walking between venues is part of the experience, but it also means you need to make choices.

Who will enjoy Night of Discoveries?

It is particularly suitable for students, curious adults, couples, groups of friends and visitors who enjoy moving between culture and science. No specialist knowledge is required; the main appeal is the contrast between accessible talks, music and visual experiences.

It is less suitable for visitors looking for one quiet seat and a fully predictable evening. Families with young children should check the final guidance, as specific age advice and children’s programming for the 2026 edition have not yet been clearly published.

Is it worth attending?

Yes, especially if you want an event that feels genuinely connected to Leiden. Historic university buildings, the botanical garden and cultural venues are central to the experience rather than simply acting as a backdrop. The scale of more than one hundred items makes the evening varied and distinctive.

You will not be able to see everything. Popular talks may reach capacity, and moving between venues takes time. The best approach is to choose three or four priorities and leave room for an unexpected installation or performance along the route.

How to plan the evening

• Check the final timetable shortly before 19 September, as many individual times and venues are still listed as to be announced.
• Select no more than three fixed must-see items and build your route around them.
• Allow ten to fifteen minutes between venues, especially around popular starting times.
• Wear comfortable shoes and bring a light waterproof layer because part of the route and programme is outdoors.
• Train or bicycle is usually easiest. The Rapenburg and Hortus area is roughly a fifteen-minute walk from Leiden Central Station.

Tickets and prices

Tickets for the 2026 edition are on sale. The public event pages do not yet present one clear overview of every ticket category, current price and possible service fee. Use the official ticket shop for the latest amount and availability, and check the event status again shortly before travelling.

Accessibility and facilities

The festival uses a mix of historic and modern venues. Wheelchair access, seating, toilets, sound levels and crowding may therefore vary by building. Consult the final venue map and contact the organiser directly with specific accessibility questions. Expect walking, queues and a mixture of indoor and outdoor conditions.
