Escape Room Leiden is inside the Kruithuisje on Jan van Houtkade: the listed Oistenrijck wall tower from around 1485. It is the only surviving tower from Leiden’s former 33 wall towers. Inside, the building becomes Rembrandt’s secret studio. Your team must find his great secret and escape within sixty minutes.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, particularly for groups wanting a classic puzzle room with a strong local story. The genuine medieval building creates more credibility than a constructed set. Do not expect a huge actor-led or multi-room production; this is a compact, demanding and personally hosted room where communication matters.

Gameplay and difficulty

The room uses riddles, codes, keys, paintings, hidden drawers and observation tasks. The operator states that roughly 30% of teams escape. Four or five players provide the best balance between ideas, space and participation. Six can make the single compact room crowded, while two creates a more intense challenge.

Rembrandt and Leiden

Rembrandt is more than decorative branding here. Leiden is his birthplace and the story connects paintings, light, darkness and hidden information to his secret studio. No art-history knowledge is required. The story is fictional entertainment, but its connection to the city is unusually convincing.

Prices and team size

Two players pay €100 in total. Three to six players pay a fixed team price of €130. This equals roughly €43.33 each for three, €32.50 for four, €26 for five and €21.67 for six. The operator recommends four or five. More than six players are not permitted; larger parties must book consecutive games.

Children’s party

The standard game is recommended from about age fifteen. Children aged ten to fourteen can play an adapted version with more hints, simplified difficult puzzles and less intense story elements. A children’s party costs €135 per game for up to six children. One non-playing adult may accompany the group free of charge.

Language

The complete game is available in Dutch or English. The introduction, clues and riddles are provided in English when requested. No official German version is offered, so German-speaking teams need sufficient Dutch or English.

Booking and possible start times

There are no walk-in hours. Advance booking and prepayment are required. Usual possible start times are 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00, 20:00 and 22:00, but only available slots appear in the booking calendar. For today or tomorrow, the operator recommends calling or emailing.

Duration and arrival

The game lasts exactly sixty minutes. Arrive fifteen minutes before the booked time for briefing and the safety card. The total visit takes about ninety minutes including reception and debrief. Late arrival may reduce playing time because the next team must start on schedule.

Cancellation

Cancellation or changes are free through five days before the booking. Cancelling three or four days before gives a 50% refund. There is no refund one or two days before, on the day or for a no-show.

Safety and claustrophobia

The host monitors the game by camera and audio and can intervene or provide hints. An emergency button opens the door and the door can remain open on request. Approved fire-safety equipment is available. Players may not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Phones remain outside in a lockable cabinet.

Accessibility

The escape room is not well suited to wheelchair users. The monument has narrow passages and steep stairs. Call in advance for limited mobility, balance problems, claustrophobia, pregnancy or seating needs. This is not a modern fully step-free visitor environment.

Getting there

Garenmarkt car park is about two minutes away. Leiden Lammenschans station is roughly ten minutes on foot and Leiden Central around twenty minutes. A bus stop on Jan van Houtkade is approximately one minute away, while the historic centre can be reached in five minutes.

The combined visitor rating is 4.7/5 from 597 ratings across Google, EscapeTalk and Facebook. The historic setting, hosting, atmosphere and original puzzles receive frequent praise. Criticism mainly concerns the largely single-room format, demanding or information-heavy play and six players feeling crowded. The Facebook measurement is older and is clearly marked for rechecking.
