StoryTrail Leiden is not a conventional city tour focused mainly on dates and façades. A professional storyteller uses streets, bridges and monuments as the scenery for a theatrical performance. The group enters stories about the siege and relief of Leiden in 1574 or the young Rembrandt. The storyteller plays characters, uses humour, involves guests and turns historical events into live scenes.

Stories about 1574 and Rembrandt

The 1574 programme covers the Spanish siege, hunger, fear, difficult choices and eventual relief. Other performances focus on Rembrandt van Rijn and the city in which he learned to observe, draw and paint. The precise storyline can vary by advertised performance and storyteller, so check the title of the selected date.

Duration and distance

A regular StoryTrail lasts around ninety minutes and covers approximately 1.5 kilometres. The pace is gentle because the group stops frequently for scenes. Participants must nevertheless walk and stand for most of the performance. Fixed seating and indoor breaks are not normally included. Good shoes are advisable on brick paving, bridges and wet streets.

Tickets

A standard adult ticket costs €22.50. Early booking may offer an Early Bird rate of €19.95. Children aged seven to twelve pay €12.50. Younger children can have different conditions by performance. Temporary discounts and Early Bird prices should not be presented as permanent standard rates.

Dates and booking

StoryTrail operates on specific performance dates and has no daily walk-in programme. The live calendar shows the date, start time, storyteller and remaining availability. The current calendar included Leiden performances in September and November 2026. A permanent location page should therefore link to the calendar instead of hard-coding dates.

Meeting point

The current Leiden calendar states Doelenpoortsbrug opposite Oude Varkenmarkt 19. An individual performance can potentially use another meeting point, so the ticket confirmation remains decisive. Groups may request their own date and time. The website presents indicative group options of roughly €16 to €36 per person depending on size, public or private format and extras. The current calendar says a custom date can begin from eight participants, while older location pages sometimes mention six. Request a quotation and confirm the minimum.

Public Leiden performances are normally in Dutch. Groups can request an English-language performance, potentially with a surcharge. This can suit international companies and visitors, but the language must be agreed explicitly in advance.

The walk is generally suitable from around age seven. Themes include war, hunger and suspense, but the activity is designed as a cultural family performance rather than a horror tour. Ninety minutes of listening and standing can be long for younger children. Parents should assess interest and attention span.

Weather

The performance takes place outdoors and may continue in light rain or cold weather. A waterproof jacket is more practical than a large umbrella that blocks other guests. Extreme weather can cause changes or cancellation. Wear layers and expect wind on bridges and open squares.

For group bookings, the general terms state 50% cancellation costs more than fourteen days ahead, 75% more than seven days ahead and 100% from seven days. Individual tickets may follow the ticket platform's terms. Read the conditions before confirming a large booking.

Our assessment

The theatrical format makes StoryTrail exceptional. A strong storyteller can transform a square into a scene from 1574 within minutes. The central, compact route is practical. Limitations include scheduled dates, Dutch as the standard language, outdoor weather and variation between storytellers. For guests open to interaction, it is a highly memorable way to discover Leiden.
