Why visit?

See Leiden from the canals

Rondvaart Leiden departs from Aalmarkt 4 in the historic centre. The regular city cruise lasts around one hour and passes old quays, low bridges, listed buildings and details that are easy to miss from the street. An experienced skipper provides commentary in Dutch and English, making this an easy first introduction for visitors who want to see much of central Leiden without planning a route.

The public city cruise

The public cruise suits individual visitors, couples, families and small groups. Adults pay €13.50, students and seniors aged 67 or over €12.50 and children up to twelve €8.50. Babies on an adult’s lap travel free. The fare includes roughly sixty minutes on the water, a skipper and commentary. Food and drinks are normally extra and may be ordered ashore before departure when available.

Open or covered boats

An open boat provides the clearest views in good weather. Covered boats can be used in rain, making the cruise less weather-sensitive than a self-drive boat or SUP. Thunderstorms, exceptionally strong wind or unsafe conditions can still change the route or cancel a departure. The latest booking confirmation takes priority.

Private cruises and groups

Private boats are available for birthdays, company outings, family celebrations and closed groups. A skippered boat starts at €215 for one hour. Published rates are based on a boat for up to twenty people; larger groups can be divided across larger or multiple vessels. Private cruising offers more control over time, atmosphere, duration and catering, but provides best value when the boat is well filled.

Food and drink packages

Options include drinks, lunch, barbecue and pizza cruises, beer and wine tastings and themed group outings. A drinks cruise starts at €26 per person for one hour when based on at least fifteen participants. A pizza cruise starts at €46.50 per person for ninety minutes. Smaller groups may face a minimum spend or higher price per person, so request a final quotation.

Drive an electric boat yourself

Visitors wanting independence can rent an electric boat without a licence. The standard boat carries up to eight people. Two hours starts at €120 and four hours at €225. Self-drive boating requires a sober designated driver, attention around low bridges and traffic and punctual return. Two hours covers a compact central route; four hours is more relaxed for a wider loop.

SUP rental

Stable SUP boards are rented to beginners and experienced paddlers aged sixteen or over. Two hours costs €25 and four hours €40. Previous experience is not compulsory, but confident swimming, reasonable balance and clothes that may get wet are important. Bring dry clothing and waterproof protection for valuables.

Departure point and access

Aalmarkt is beside the Waag and central shopping streets. Leiden Centraal is about ten minutes away on foot. Bicycle parking is nearby. Drivers can consider Haagweg parking and continue towards the centre. Arrive at least fifteen minutes early because a scheduled vessel cannot always wait for late guests.

Accessibility

Boarding varies by boat, quay and water level. Wheelchair users, visitors with limited mobility and families with a large pushchair should ask in advance which vessel will operate and what help is possible. Once aboard, the public cruise is calm and not physically demanding. Self-drive boating and SUP require substantially more mobility.

Who will enjoy it?

The public cruise is strong for first-time visitors, older guests, families and anyone wanting an efficient overview. Private cruises suit groups wanting convenience and exclusivity. A rental boat fits people who prefer their own pace and route. SUP is the most active choice and works best in calm, dry weather.

Critical price view

The public cruise offers good value for an hour with commentary. Private boats and packages become expensive faster, particularly for a small party. Their advertised starting prices are only indications because duration, group size, catering and vessel determine the final total. Check the booking total or quotation carefully.

Our assessment

The highly central departure point, affordable public cruise and broad choice of private boats, packages, self-drive rental and SUP make Rondvaart Leiden one of the city’s most complete water operators. The wide product range also makes comparison less simple. Visitors who choose the correct format in advance receive a strong Leiden water experience.
