Self-drive boating without a licence

Sloepdelen rents electric quiet boats without a skipper. The Leiden jetty is at Boommarkt near Museum De Lakenhal and the historic centre. You choose pace and route and may bring food and drinks. No licence is required, but the renter and driver must be at least eighteen and the driver must remain sober.

The handover is largely digital. About fifteen minutes before the booking, an SMS link activates the boat. A charged phone, correct number and mobile reception are essential. Read the navigation instructions before arriving rather than learning every control at the jetty.

Price, minimum duration and deposit

Non-members pay €65 per hour with a two-hour minimum, so the lowest rental is €130. A €150 deposit is added. The FAQ states that a clean, punctual return leads to repayment within five working days. Extra time, damage, cleaning or delaying the next group may be deducted.

Value improves sharply with group size: eight people pay €16.25 each for two hours and twelve around €10.83, excluding extra time. For two people, €65 each is relatively high and a canal cruise may be cheaper.

Boat and boarding

The classic boat is stable, electric and suitable for up to twelve. Direction is controlled by a tiller and speed by a separate control. Beginners can learn it, but narrow canals, delayed steering response, low bridges, wind and tour boats require attention.

Boarding from the quay involves a step down and balance. Full wheelchair access is not confirmed. Contact the operator about mobility aids, pushchairs or boarding help. Up to two free children’s life jackets can be added during booking.

Two hours through the canals

The official two-hour canal route is the logical first choice, passing areas around Museum De Lakenhal, Scheltema, Herengracht and De Burcht. It is enough for a continuous circuit but leaves little room for long terrace stops.

Plan conservatively. Speed is low and traffic slows progress. Choose a main route and a shorter fallback. Let one passenger navigate so the driver can watch the water.

Three hours towards Het Joppe and De Kaag

The three-hour route leaves the city for quieter water, Het Joppe and the Kagerplassen. It offers more nature and open views but is more exposed to wind. Check conditions and turn back early enough.

Three hours is also more relaxed when staying in the centre, as it allows a short stop. For non-members, the rental rises to €195 plus deposit.

Rules that matter

Keep right, approach bridges and crossings slowly and yield to commercial and tour boats. Many Leiden waterways have a 6 km/h limit; follow local signs. Do not moor to trees, bridges or prohibited places.

Speakers and amplified music are prohibited even when switched off. Food and drinks are allowed, but the driver may not drink. Do not leave an activated boat unattended and return it clean and on time.

Dogs, children and groups

Well-behaved dogs are welcome. Bring a blanket and remove all hair or mess. Young children need continuous supervision and life jackets should be booked. Ask in advance when more than two are required.

Ten to twelve passengers reduce the per-person price but make the boat fuller. Assign a driver, navigator and timekeeper and keep the floor clear.

Season, weather and changes

Leiden operates from 1 March through 31 October, daily from 10:00 to 23:00. The last start is two hours before closing. The boat is open, so persistent rain, cold or strong wind can make the experience uncomfortable.

The FAQ allows a booking to be moved free of charge or converted to credit valid for one year. Actual cancellation follows the general terms; read them before payment.

Finding the jetty

The location page lists Boommarkt 19, while the FAQ says near number 8. Follow the current confirmation and SMS rather than an old map pin. Leiden Centraal is about thirteen minutes away on foot and Lammermarkt garage around seven.

Arrive about twenty minutes early for parking, locating the exact boat, loading bags and activating it. A late departure does not automatically extend the return time.

Honest verdict

Editorial score: 8.4/10. Central departure, quiet electric power, capacity and independence are strong. It is excellent value for eight to twelve but less attractive for small parties, bad weather or visitors unwilling to steer. Digital handover is efficient but less personal than a staffed rental desk. Choose it when self-driving is part of the fun.
