Why visit?

See Leiden from your own SUP board

SUPpen in Leiden offers a more active view of the city than a standard canal cruise. You stand or kneel on a board, move under your own power and see bridges, quays and historic façades almost at water level. The session starts outside the busiest part of the centre at Amphoraweg. That calm first section gives beginners room to practise balance, posture and paddle technique before entering busier waterways.

This is not a board-only rental operation. Public tours and clinics are guided. That reduces spontaneity, but it is useful for visitors unfamiliar with Leiden: the guide manages pace, explains bridge clearance and traffic and leads a route that would otherwise require preparation.

How an evening tour works

Allow about 2.5 to 3 hours for a regular Wednesday or Friday Night SUP. Meeting time is usually around 19:00. You first change, receive equipment and listen to instruction. Time on the water is approximately ninety minutes. Returning equipment and changing afterwards also take time, so avoid a tight restaurant reservation immediately after the activity.

Instruction covers mounting and leaving the board safely, stable posture, forward paddling, braking, turning and passing beneath bridges. Many first-timers begin on their knees and stand later. Falling in is possible, although not inevitable. A leash keeps the board close and a wetsuit can be supplied when conditions require one.

Beginners, lessons and clinics

Previous experience is not required. First-time paddlers can join a guided tour, although a dedicated lesson is the better choice when balance or confidence is a concern. Lessons follow World SUP Association principles and focus on technique, safety and efficient movement. Small-group clinics provide a compact introduction before committing to a longer city tour.

City SUP activities, clinics and lessons are available for groups. They suit friends, teams, company outings and stag or hen groups looking for activity without choosing an extreme sport. Participants still need confident swimming ability, reasonable fitness and enough mobility to move independently on and around the board.

What is included and what to bring

The standard price includes board, paddle, leash, instruction and guidance. A wetsuit can be used when needed. Life jackets in several sizes are available for participants who want one, but they do not replace the swimming requirement. Non-swimmers cannot participate.

Bring water shoes or thin surf shoes, which are required and are not normally supplied. Swimwear, a towel, dry clothes and drinking water are also useful. Keep valuables to a minimum. Storage is available, but essential items are safest in a properly secured waterproof pouch. There is no hot shower, so dry layers matter on cooler evenings.

Weather and safety

SUP depends on wind, thunderstorms and visibility. Light rain does not always stop a session, but strong wind, heavy rain, thunder or otherwise unsafe conditions lead to rescheduling or cancellation. Check messages on the day and contact the operator when uncertain.

Participants must follow instructions, use a leash and watch for tour boats and low bridges. Official information asks for valid liability and health insurance. Alcohol before paddling is a poor combination with balance and water safety; save drinks for afterwards.

Getting there and parking

The start is at Amphoraweg 10, west of the historic centre. Cycling is the easiest option from central Leiden and takes roughly twelve minutes from Leiden Centraal at a normal pace. Drivers can look for spaces along Amphoraweg or around Diamantplein. Parking zones and prices can change, so check current signs and apps.

Arrive at least fifteen minutes before the stated meeting time. Parking, walking to the launch, changing and equipment allocation all take longer than expected. Late arrivals may miss essential safety information or be unable to catch the group.

Who will enjoy it?

This is particularly good for visitors who have already explored Leiden on foot and want a different perspective. Active couples, friends and small teams benefit most. It is also visually rewarding, although phones and cameras should only be taken with secure waterproof protection.

It is less suitable for non-swimmers, people who are highly anxious on water, visitors unable to enter and leave the board independently and anyone seeking a passive, fully comfortable sightseeing trip. A conventional cruise or skippered boat is a better alternative in those cases.

Honest verdict

Editorial score: 8.5/10. Exercise, guidance and the unusual city perspective form a strong package. €25 for a regular tour is fair because equipment, instruction and guidance are included, and the calm launch is helpful for beginners. The main drawbacks are weather dependence, no board-only rental, no hot shower and the requirement to bring water shoes. Choose it for a complete guided experience rather than maximum freedom or guaranteed operation.
