The €57.50 four-course offer was stated by the official homepage to run only until the end of July, so it is no longer presented as a current offer on 7 August even though the old promotional text remains online.

Why visit?

Bistro Bord’o is a compact French bistro for visitors deliberately planning a long culinary evening. Chef-owner Oscar Zitman cooks in a French-oriented style with occasional international influences. The current Michelin Guide highlights strong ingredients and French culinary roots; Gault&Millau scores Bord’o 13/20 in 2026 and also praises its Europe-focused wine list.

Menu and prices

The current chef-menu PDF lists three courses at €51, four at €63, five at €75 and six at €85. All-in prices are €84, €107, €125 and €140 respectively and include table water, paired wines and coffee or tea with friandises. Wine pairing costs €8 per glass separately. À la carte options include oysters, steak tartare, turbot, a chef-menu main and châteaubriand for two.

Important: on 7 August 2026 the homepage still displays a four-course seasonal offer for €57.50, but the same text says it ran only until the end of July. Tourist Guide Leiden therefore does not treat it as a current deal. The Dutch chef-menu PDF linked from the current menu page also returned a 404 during checking; the English version with the same date remained accessible. This is reflected in the reliability score.

Wine and atmosphere

Wine is central to the experience. The July 2026 list runs to twelve pages, is strongly European and ranges from accessible bottles to serious Burgundy, Bordeaux, Rhône and other regions. The compact dining room feels calm and personal; in good weather the pontoon terrace beside Apothekersdijk is a major extra.

Who is it for?

Bord’o works best for couples, wine lovers and visitors planning an anniversary or quiet special dinner. It is less suitable for a quick meal, young children or a low-cost spontaneous dinner. Recent public feedback is highly positive about the food, wine, explanations and dietary accommodation, while some guests mention small portions, pacing and whether the experience feels distinctive enough for every diner at this price.

Lunch, groups and booking

Dinner runs Tuesday to Saturday from 18:00; Michelin lists closing at midnight. Lunch is not a walk-in service: the venue says it is available for groups of at least six and must be booked by email. Official group pages differ slightly, with one mentioning 7–35 guests and another a maximum of 32 indoors. Confirm larger parties directly.

Dietary needs and accessibility

A separate vegetarian chef’s menu is published and guests are asked to report allergies in advance. That does not guarantee coeliac-safe preparation because no separate gluten-free work area or fixed cross-contact procedure is published. Full wheelchair access and an adapted toilet are also not clearly confirmed on the official site, so contact the restaurant in advance if this matters.

What makes it special

  • 3–6-course chef’s menu for €51–€85

  • Allow 2.5–4 hours for a full menu.
  • The €57.50 seasonal offer has expired and is not treated as a current deal.
  • Report vegetarian needs, allergies or coeliac disease when booking.

  • Small to medium groups

Crowds & changes

The canal-side pontoon terrace adds considerable value in good weather. In rain, the compact dining room remains atmospheric, but an important part of the Leiden waterside experience disappears.

Facilities

Confirmed: booking, waterside terrace, vegetarian chef’s menu, wine pairing, lunch on request and group dinners. An adapted toilet, full wheelchair route and separate gluten-free preparation area are not clearly confirmed officially.

Our editorial assessment

How does Bistro Bord’o score?

Bistro Bord’o is a strong choice for a calm culinary evening built around French cooking and wine. Michelin inclusion, 13/20 from Gault&Millau, a serious wine list and very positive visitor signals support the quality. The strict new methodology keeps the score at 7.8, however: Bord’o is not unique enough for a 9, the final bill can become high, and the official online information is not consistently current or reliable.

Score breakdown

Core quality

8.3/10

The cooking has a clear French foundation and a current multi-course concept, supported by a current Michelin Guide listing and 13/20 from Gault&Millau 2026. Recent guest feedback is strong on flavour, wine pairing and service. The score remains below exceptional territory because the public evidence does not show a Michelin star or equivalent top-tier distinction, and some guests find the style or portions less distinctive.

Distinctive for Leiden

7.5/10

The combination of an intimate French bistro, serious European wine list and canal-side pontoon terrace gives Bord’o a clear identity. Leiden also has several strong culinary restaurants, so the concept and setting are distinctive without being unique enough for a 9.

Atmosphere & overall experience

8.0/10

The compact, home-like dining room, calm fine-dining format, tableside explanation and waterside terrace work well for a long dinner or special occasion. It is less suitable for young children, a quick meal or visitors looking for a very lively setting.

Value for money

7.2/10

The €51–€85 chef’s menu is defensible for this level and the all-in options are transparent, but a dinner with wine quickly approaches or exceeds €100 per person. The strong wine list and careful cooking support the price, but this is not an obvious value-led restaurant.

Reliability & usability

6.8/10

Booking, contact details, dinner hours, parking, lunch conditions and dietary requests are reasonably well explained. Weaknesses are that the official homepage still displayed an offer ending in July when checked on 7 August, the Dutch chef-menu PDF linked from the current menu page returned a 404, and group pages mention both 32 and 35 as maximum group size. This prevents a high reliability score.

Strengths

  • Strong French foundation and carefully prepared chef’s menus
  • Extensive European wine list and strong food-wine focus
  • Michelin Guide and 13/20 from Gault&Millau 2026
  • Intimate atmosphere and attractive waterside terrace
  • Dietary requests and a vegetarian menu can be arranged in advance

!Points to consider

  • A full dinner with wine can quickly exceed €100 per person
  • Not designed for a quick or very casual meal
  • Official homepage still displays an expired July offer
  • Dutch chef-menu link returned a 404 when checked
  • Official group pages mention different limits and full accessibility is not clearly confirmed
